Cardinal Simonis of Utrecht resigns

Cardinal Adriaan Simonis has resigned as Archbishop of Utrecht, Netherlands, having reached the statutory age.

Afscheid kardinaal Simonis

A busy month for the appointment of bishops in Europe

In the last month there has been a considerable amount of activity at the Congregation of Bishops with regard to some of the vacant sees in Europe.

Seven ordinaries have been named, one German, four Italian and two French, and an auxiliary has been appointed for the French diocese of Poitiers.

- The easternmost diocese of Germany, Görlitz, right on the Polish border, had been vacant the longest of all German dioceses. A priest from the neighbouring diocese of Dresden-Meissen, Konrad Zdarsa, has now been appointed as bishop.

- This month a second religious has been appointed to a vacant see, this time a Franciscan to the Archdiocese of Strasbourg in France. Jean-Pierre Grallet, O.F.M., is already auxiliary in Strasbourg, and was previously French provincial of his order and a professor of theology:

- The next appointment, that of Stanislas Lalanne as bishop of Coutances and Avranches in Normandy, France, again shows how being Secretary General of a Bishops' Conference can lead straight to episcopal ordination:

Droguet & Ardant).

- Finally, a new auxiliary bishop has been named for the diocese of Poitiers in France. It is Pascal Wintzer, Vicar General and pastor of the Cathedral parish of Rouen:

Pope writes on G8 Summit

The Vatican has recently published a very interesting letter written at the end of last year by Pope Benedict XVI to Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, as her country was preparing to take over the Presidency of the G8. Here is the original German text and an English translation:

Ihrer Exzellenz
Dr. Angela MERKEL

Dezember 2006

BENEDICTUS PP. XVI

To Her Excellency
Dr Angela MERKEL
Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany

On 17 July 2006, at the conclusion of the Saint Petersburg Summit, you announced that under your Presidency, the Group of the seven leading economic powers plus Russia (G8) would continue to keep the question of global poverty on its agenda. Subsequently, on 18 October last, the German Federal Government stated that assistance to Africa would be a key priority at the Heiligendamm Summit.

I therefore write to you in order to express the gratitude of the Catholic Church and my own personal appreciation for these announcements.

I welcome the fact that the question of poverty, with specific reference to Africa, now appears on the agenda of the G8; indeed, it should be given the highest attention and priority, for the sake of poor and rich countries alike. The fact that the German Presidency of the G8 coincides with the Presidency of the European Union presents a unique opportunity to tackle this issue. I am confident that Germany will exercise positively the leadership role that falls to her with regard to this question of global importance that affects us all.

At our meeting on 28 August last, you assured me that Germany shares the Holy See’s concern regarding the inability of rich countries to offer the poorest countries, especially those from Africa, financial and trade conditions capable of promoting their lasting development.

The Holy See has repeatedly insisted that, while the Governments of poorer countries have a responsibility with regard to good governance and the elimination of poverty, the active involvement of international partners is indispensable. This should not be seen as an "extra" or as a concession which could be postponed in the face of pressing national concerns. It is a grave and unconditional moral responsibility, founded on the unity of the human race, and on the common dignity and shared destiny of rich and poor alike, who are being drawn ever closer by the process of globalization.

Trade conditions favourable to poor countries, including, above all, broad and unconditional access to markets, should be made available and guaranteed in lasting and reliable ways.

Provision must also be made for the rapid, total and unconditional cancellation of the external debt of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) and of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Measures should also be adopted to ensure that these countries do not fall once again into situations of unsustainable debt.
Developed countries must also recognize and implement fully the commitments they have made with regard to external aid.

Moreover, a substantial investment of resources for research and for the development of medicines to treat AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other tropical diseases is needed. In this regard, the first and foremost scientific challenge facing developed countries is the discovery of a vaccine against malaria. There is also a need to make available medical and pharmaceutical technology and health care expertise without imposing legal or economic conditions.

Finally, the international community must continue to work for the substantial reduction of both the legal and the illegal arms trade, the illegal trade of precious raw materials, and the flight of capital from poor countries, as well as for the elimination of the practices of money-laundering and corruption of officials of poor countries.

While these challenges should be undertaken by all members of the international community, the G8 and the European Union should take the lead.

People from different religions and cultures throughout the world are convinced that achieving the goal of eradicating extreme poverty by the year 2015 is one of the most important tasks in today’s world. Moreover, they also hold that such an objective is indissolubly linked to world peace and security. They look to the Presidency, held by the German Government in the months ahead, to ensure that the G8 and the European Union undertake the measures necessary to overcome poverty. They are ready to play their part in such efforts and they support your commitment in a spirit of solidarity.

Invoking God’s blessings on the work of the G8 and the European Union under the German Presidency, I avail myself of the occasion to renew to Your Excellency the assurance of my highest consideration.

From the Vatican, 16 December 2006

BENEDICTUS PP. XVI

... and a comment in English on B16 two years on

Ann Rodgers from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes:

Celebrating two years as pontiff, Benedict XVI assumes new role
April 15, 2007

Two years ago this week, as crowds in St. Peter's Square eagerly awaited a new pope, an elderly German whom critics had dubbed "PanzerKardinal" for his silencing of dissenting theologians stepped onto the balcony and introduced himself as "a humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord."

Since that evening, Pope Benedict XVI has shed his image as a fierce enforcer. Instead of using his first encyclical to denounce Catholics who stray from orthodoxy, which conservatives had hoped for and liberals feared, he devoted it to proclaiming that "God is love."

"In a world where the name of God is sometimes associated with vengeance or even a duty of hatred and violence ... I wish in my first encyclical to speak of the love which God lavishes upon us and which we in turn must share with others," he wrote, startling angry culture warriors on both sides.

Tomorrow the former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger will turn 80 and on Thursday he will mark two years as pope. The oldest elected in 275 years, his papacy is not expected to be long. The marks he makes now are the legacy he intends to leave.

Along with love, his other great theme is the need for faith and reason to work together to create a just society. Despite a ghastly gaffe during a speech on that topic in Germany, he has stressed good relations with other faiths and worked toward unity with Orthodox Christians. His few statements that lay down the law have been nuanced enough to allow bishops some leeway in applying them.

He draws record crowds to his weekly audiences, surpassing those who came to hear Pope John Paul II.

"They are coming because they are being fed," said George Weigel, author of "God's Choice: Pope Benedict and the Future of the Catholic Church."

"This is a master teacher who can distill 2,000 years of Christian tradition and seven decades of his own scholarship into very beautiful teaching. That is the story of his pontificate. It is going to be a teaching pontificate."

The Rev. Thomas Reese, whose work as editor of the center-left Jesuit magazine Cardinal Ratzinger had criticized, was forced to resign shortly after the new pope's election. Today, Father Reese calls Pope Benedict "better than expected."

He praises his choice of new bishops, saying they are more inclined to persuade people to follow church teaching than to denounce them for not doing so.

The pope "truly believes that you can describe the Christian faith in a beautiful way that is attractive to people, and not simply as a list of don'ts," he said.

He did not welcome the Vatican's recent action against a theologian, the Rev. Jon Sobrino in El Salvador, whose view of Jesus was denounced as "dangerous." But it amounted to no more than a negative book review, Father Reese said, and did not require the priest to be silent or stop writing -- although his bishop chose to remove him from his teaching post.

Pope Benedict was a model of civility in September 2005, when he hosted a friendly reunion with the liberal Swiss theologian, the Rev. Hans Kung, whom he had banned in 1979 from teaching official classes on Catholic theology. Kung rejects many church teachings, including that Christianity is the only true faith.

"My question is, have any bishops followed his example and had lunch with a local dissident?" Father Reese said.

Surprise to right and left

Maybe not. But one theologian whom Cardinal Ratzinger forced from the Catholic University of America said Pope Benedict has left him "pleasantly surprised."

"I don't think he's going to change anything but I think he has become quite conscious of his role of the bishop of Rome as the center of unity in the church," said the Rev. Charles Curran, now at Southern Methodist University.

Some conservatives have grumbled that his new office made their champion timid. But Mike Sullivan, vice president-president of Catholics United for the Faith in Steubenville, Ohio, believes his fellow conservatives should emulate Benedict.

"He is reaching out to people who the church would not usually be able to reach. He is able to dialogue with dissenters, with other religions, with secularists and relativists in a way that really draws them into the struggle with the truth," he said.

Benedict has made constant calls for peace and social justice. As Cardinal Ratzinger, he opposed the invasion of Iraq, saying that "just war" theory had no place for "pre-emptive war." His most recent criticism came on Easter, when he said "nothing positive comes from Iraq, torn apart by continual slaughter as the civil population flees."

His recent major document on the Eucharist added a twist to arguments about politicians. Using a term favored by conservatives, he said that a short list of issues was "not negotiable" for Catholic legislators. But to the conservative list -- womb-to-tomb protection of human life, families built on heterosexual marriage, and parents' right to educate children -- he added "the common good in all its forms."

That's a church term for social justice, the leading concern for Catholics of the left and global South. It did not say that priests must deny communion to dissenting legislators.

Some observers believe that statement was the work of the committee that wrote the first draft. But Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C., was on that committee and said the pope himself worked on that passage.

"That reflects his language over the language that was in the propositions," he said.

"I believe he was speaking of the whole social justice teaching of the church and saying these values are not negotiable. When you look at Jesus' teaching [on final judgment], he is saying that if you do not feed the hungry or clothe the naked, those things exclude you from the kingdom. ... The pope is talking about gospel values."

He knew Cardinal Ratzinger, and has been astounded at how quickly the academic theologian changed roles to become pastor of 1 billion souls.

"While his first encyclical was written in theological language, the whole focus is pastoral, explaining to people how to live out the love of God. I just found that remarkable, coming from a pope whose history is so profoundly and deeply theological. His first works to the church have been practical," he said.

Others are less impressed. David Gibson, author of the biography "The Rule of Benedict," said he changed only his image.

"We've gone from two poles of propaganda, from God's Rottweiler to papal pussycat," he said.

"Neither is quite true. He's talking about God's love, about his experiences of faith. He's becoming the Dalai Lama of Catholicism. Yet, under the radar, he's taken a number of serious actions. ... He's preaching a very lovely Christianity, but is he exercising that same love and charity?"

While others say that a document on gay seminarians gave bishops just enough latitude to accept those committed to celibacy, its negative view of such men is harmful, Mr. Gibson said.

"It says that homosexuals are a deviant class of deficient people."

Trouble in Regensburg

He believes the pope's greatest flaw is a failure to acknowledge past mistakes by church leadership. At Regensberg, Germany, he infamously quoted a medieval emperor's claim that Muhammad brought only conversion by sword, but he did not lament violence committed in the name of the church. At Auschwitz, his meditation on the Holocaust did not mention the history of Catholic anti-Semitism.

"He's not anti-Semitic, he's not anti-Islamic necessarily, but he's not reflective about the church's past," Mr. Gibson said.

Most people consider the Regensburg speech the low mark of his papacy. Angry Muslims rioted and killed a nun in Somalia, even though the pope repeatedly said that the emperor's view was not his own.

Father Reese said the speech revealed the pope's flaws.

"One of the strengths of Benedict is that he writes his own speeches for the most part, but that is also one of his weaknesses," he said. "It's clearly a thoughtful speech -- and his target was not Muslims but European secularists -- but it should have been enriched by input from people who are real experts in Islam and some other things."

Dr. Weigel, on the other hand, regards Regensburg as the most important papal address since Pope John Paul at the United Nations in 1985.

"It defines one of the key themes of the first two years of his pontificate, the necessary interface between faith and reason," he said. "John Paul wrote that humanity has to rise on two wings of faith and reason. Benedict has now identified the problem that happens when those wings fall off the bird. Irrational faith teaches that God wants you to strap a bomb on and blow up people in a pizza parlor. And reason without faith has made Europe unable to say why blowing up people in a pizza parlor is a bad idea."

On the left, Sister Christine Schenk, executive director of FutureChurch, has not backed off her criticism of limiting the priesthood to celibate males.

"He's not dealing with the priest shortage. It's almost like he's in an ivory tower," she said.

But she was delighted with remarks the pope has made about women, including vague hints that they could take on more roles in the church. She cited talks he gave on the influence of women in the New Testament church, in which he endorsed women's right to speak in church, and spoke of a deacon named Phoebe.

The pope "put on the map that women's leadership was extremely significant," she said.

Phyllis Zagano, senior research associate at Hofstra University, advocates the ordination of female deacons, which existed in the early church and whose restoration has not been ruled out. She wouldn't be shocked if this pope brought them back.

"I don't know that he will be the first one to do it, but he may be the first one to mention it. I know all about snowballs in the netherworld, but I really think that he could do it," she said.

Pope Benedict - a belated 80th birthday greeting

Since my internet connection has not been working for several weeks, I am sorry to say that I have been unable to keep up to date with this blog - AND I HAVE MISSED THE POPE'S BIRTHDAY, which was yesterday!!

So here is my belated greeting to His Holiness:

Dear Holy Father,

I hope you had a very happy and holy 80th birthday yesterday and wish you very many happy returns, good health in the coming years and God's abundant blessings for your work as Bishop of Rome.

The Church is grateful to the Almighty for your ministry. We entered a period of hope and love with your election, hope and love which you express in your very being, and which you do not hesitate to remind us of in your teaching. I have no doubt that your "approval ratings" among Catholics would exceed those of your predecessor.

God bless you.

EEA3 in Sibiu, Romania, in September

This year in September approximately 2500 delegates from all the different churches and Christian communities in Europe will be meeting in the Romanian city of Sibiu, known by its once predominantly German-speaking population as Hermannstadt, in Siebenbürgen. They will be taking part in the Third European Ecumenical Assembly from 4th to 8th September. Since Sibiu is also Cultural Capital of Europe 2007, it will be very much in the public eye this year.

The European Ecumenical Assemblies are a joint initiative of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and the Roman Catholic Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE). The first assembly (EEA1) took place in Basel, Switzerland, in the Pentecost octave in May 1989 and expressed the commitment of European Christians to "justice, peace and the integrity of creation". 700 delegates from every country in Europe took place in this first encounter of Christians from all over the continent since the great schism of 1054. It may well have been inspired by this assembly that the churches of Eastern Europe became instrumental in the non-violent freedom process in the Communist world resulting in the fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 and the tearing down of the Iron Curtain.

EEA2 was planned for Graz in Austria for the end of June 1997 on the theme of reconciliation. The assembly brought together 700 official delegates from 124 CEC member churches and the 34 bishops' conferences of the CCEE. But perhaps the most spectacular feature of the Graz meeting was that it was also attended by more than 10,000 "ordinary" Christians from all over the continent, dialoguing, praying and celebrating together for seven days.

The most important result of EEA2 was the Charta Oecumenica, signed in Strasbourg in April 2001, which forms the framework of ecumenical partnership in Europe today and has led to the EEA3 process. Unfortunately many are very sceptical about the impact of September's assembly. It would appear that several of those responsible for the organisation are wondering whether anything significant will come of it, whether there will even be a joint communiqué at the end and what if any public notice will be taken of the meeting. It may only be a coincidence but Pope Benedict XVI will be visiting the pilgrimage town of Maria Zell in Austria at the same time as the Sibiu assembly, and will no doubt attract much media attention.

At the recent preparatory conference in the Luther City of Wittenberg there was much despondency and frustration. The Evangelical Bishop of Hanover, Germany, Margot Kässmann, was herself critical of the fact that the churches have not yet been able to give a convincing signal that they are the decisive voice for justice, peace and maintaining the integrity of creation. She went on to say that is is no longer enough for Christians to meet, "what the people in Europe and the world are craving for is a Church which, while confirming its diversity and differences, jointly bears witness to Jesus Christ".

There will likely be no mutual recognition of baptism in Sibiu, no participation in each other's eucharists; the latter is not even on the agenda. What then could be achieved at all? Perhaps there will be some progress on the ecological front, perhaps in social affairs. But what should become clear is that ecumenism in Europe is still a difficult journey, with many churches fearing there will be left behind or marginalised by the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

Summary in English: Ten years ago this spring the two principal German churches, Roman Catholic and Evangelical, published a joint Social Statement stressing solidarity and social justice. Four leading Catholic women, the chairpersons of the youth, women's, workers' and family associations, have written a joint letter publicly regretting that the Churches have apparently forgotten the analyses and commitments they made in the Social Statement, that 8 million Germans are still living in precarity and that poverty is increasing. They call upon those people responsible in Church and State seriously to pursue the "future in solidarity and justice" demanded at the time by the Social Statement.

Summary in English: After the resignation from the post of president of the Italian bishops' Conference (CEI) of Cardinal Ruini, Vicar of Rome, for reasons of age, the Pope has now appointed the new archbishop of Genoa, the Most Reverend Angelo Bagnasco, to succeed him.

From Wielgus to Nycz

Here is the official Vatican announcement which put a speedy end to the embarrassing hiatus in Warsaw caused by the resignation at the very last moment of the newly appointed Archbishop, Stanisław Wielgus, after he had been leaned upon from Rome to draw the consequences from the revelation of his contacts with the Communist state security during the Soviet era:

Il Santo Padre ha nominato Arcivescovo Metropolita di Warszawa (Polonia) S.E. Mons. Kazimierz Nycz, finora Vescovo di Koszalin-Kołobrzeg

S.E. Mons.

Apparently there is a general feeling of relief and joy among the Polish hierarchy and faithful, especially Cardinal Dziwisz, the omnipresent former secretary of Pope John Paul II, now archbishop of the historically important see of Cracow, at the appointment of Bishop Nycz.

London Olympics 2012 - More Than Gold

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor has joined other English Church leaders in welcoming the ‘More Than Gold’ initiative at its launch on 26th February 2007. ‘More Than Gold’ will see Churches working together to serve sport and the community in the run up to the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The ‘More Than Gold’ launch at Westminster Central Hall was also attended by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, and former Cabinet minister Lord Brian Mawhinney. Speaking at the launch, Cardinal Murphy-O’Connor said: “I see the establishing of ‘More Than Gold’ as a push to the Christians of London, and across all the venues across the country where events will be held, to make a real contribution to the lives of those who will be our guests and our friends during the time of our games.”

‘More Than Gold’ will build on the experience of Churches supporting the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester in seeking to serve forthcoming major sporting events leading up to the London Games in 2012 and potentially beyond. In supporting the values of sport and the 2012 Games, ‘More Than Gold’ will focus on the four themes upon which the Olympic 2012 bid was made:

- Delivering an experience of a lifetime for athletes- Leaving a legacy for sport in Britain- Benefiting the community through regeneration- Supporting the IOC and the Olympic Movement.

In helping to fulfil these aims, Churches and Christian agencies hope to develop good relationships with the relevant authorities and ensure that, where appropriate, there will be an inter-faith dimension to their work.

Dydd Gwyl Dewi hapus! Happy St David's Day!

If you were lucky enough to be in Wales on March the first, you would find the country in a festive mood. Every self-respecting man, woman and child would be celebrating St. David's Day in one way or another. But who was St. David, and why is he so important to the Welsh? And just how is St. David's Day celebrated in Wales today?

Well, Saint David, or Dewi Sant, as he is known in the Welsh language, is the patron saint of Wales. He was a Celtic monk, abbot and bishop, who lived in the sixth century. During his life, he was the archbishop of Wales, and he was one of many early saints who helped to spread Christianity among the pagan Celtic tribes of western Britain.

For details of the life of Dewi, we depend mainly on his biographer, Rhigyfarch. He wrote Buchedd Dewi (the life of David) in the 11th century. Gerallt Gymro (Giraldus Cambrensis), who wrote a book about his travels through Wales in the 12th century, also gives some information about Dewi's early life. Dewi died in the sixth century, so nearly five hundred years elapsed between his death and the first manuscripts recording his life. As a result, it isn't clear how much of the history of Dewi's life is legend rather than fact.

However, both sources say, so we can be relatively certain, that Dewi was a very gentle person who lived a frugal life. It is claimed that he ate mostly bread and herbs - probably watercress, which was widely used at the time. Despite this supposedly meagre diet, it is reported that he was tall and physically strong.

Dewi is said to have been of royal lineage. His father, Sant, was the son of Ceredig, who was prince of Ceredigion, a region in South-West Wales. His mother, Non, was the daughter of a local chieftain. Legend has it that Non was also a niece of King Arthur.

Dewi was born near Capel Non (Non's chapel) on the South-West Wales coast near the present city of Saint David's. We know a little about his early life - he was educated in a monastery called Hen Fynyw, his teacher being Paulinus, a blind monk. Dewi stayed there for some years before going forth with a party of followers on his missionary travels.

Dewi travelled far on his missionary journeys through Wales, where he established several churches. He also travelled to the south and west of England and Cornwall as well as Brittany. It is also possible that he visited Ireland. Two friends of his, Saints Padarn and Teilo, are said to have often accompanied him on his journeys, and they once went together on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to meet the Patriarch.

Dewi is sometimes known, in Welsh, as 'Dewi Ddyfrwr' (David the Water Drinker) and, indeed, water was an important part of his life - he is said to have drunk nothing else. Sometimes, as a self-imposed penance, he would stand up to his neck in a lake of cold water, reciting Scripture. Little wonder, then, that some authors have seen Dewi as an early Puritan!

He founded a monastery at Glyn Rhosyn (Rose Vale) on the banks of the small river Alun where the cathedral city of St. David's stands today. The monastic brotherhood that Dewi founded was very strict, the brothers having to work very hard besides praying and celebrating masses. They had to get up very early in the morning for prayers and afterwards work very hard to help maintain life at the monastery, cultivating the land and even pulling the plough. Many crafts were followed - beekeeping, in particular, was very important. The monks had to keep themselves fed as well as the many pilgrims and travellers who needed lodgings. They also had to feed and clothe the poor and needy in their neighbourhood.

There are many stories regarding Dewi's life. It is said that he once rose a youth from death, and milestones during his life were marked by the appearance of springs of water. These events are arguably more apocryphal than factual, but are so well known to Welsh-speaking schoolchildren that it is worth mentioning them here.

Perhaps the most well-known story regarding Dewi's life is said to have taken place at the Synod of Llanddewi Brefi. They were to decide whether Dewi was to be Archbishop. A great crowd gathered at the synod, and when Dewi stood up to speak, one of the congregation shouted, 'We won't be able to see or hear him'. At that instant the ground rose till everyone could see and hear Dewi. Unsurprisingly, it was decided, very shortly afterwards, that Dewi would be the Archbishop...

It is claimed that Dewi lived for over 100 years, and it is generally accepted that he died in 589. His last words to his followers were in a sermon on the previous Sunday. Rhigyfarch transcribes these as 'Be joyful, and keep your faith and your creed. Do the little things that you have seen me do and heard about. I will walk the path that our fathers have trod before us.' 'Do the little things' ('Gwnewch y pethau bychain') is today a very well-known phrase in Welsh, and has proved an inspiration to many. On a Tuesday, the first of March, in the year 589, the monastery is said to have been 'filled with angels as Christ received his soul'.

Dewi's body was buried in the grounds of his own monastery, where the Cathedral of St. David's now stands. After his death, his influence spread far and wide - first through Britain, along what was left of the Roman roads, and by sea to Cornwall and Brittany.

St David's Day, as celebrated today, dates back to 1120, when Dewi was canonised by Pope Callactus the Second, and March 1st was included in the Church calendar. After Dewi's canonisation, many pilgrimages were made to St. David's, and it was reported that two pilgrimages there equalled one to Rome, and three pilgrimages one to Jerusalem. March 1st was celebrated until the Reformation as a holy day. Many churches are dedicated to Dewi, and some to his mother Non.

St. David was, and is, a very important figure to the Welsh. Naturally, then, St. David's Day is a time of great celebration in Wales. Societies all over Wales celebrate with special meetings and events. In St. David's Hall, Cardiff, each March 1st, there will be a concert featuring a 1000-member male voice choir, specially formed for the occasion. Male voice choirs are flown to all corners of the globe on St. David's Day, to entertain Welsh communities. I have my own happy, vivid and very special memories of St. David's Day as a child, which are typical of how St. David's Day is celebrated in Welsh schools.

I should say that I was fortunate to be born into a Welsh-speaking family. My mother tongue is Welsh, and it is only when we have English-speaking visitors that any English is heard within my home. Naturally, I attended a Welsh-medium primary school, where all subjects except English are taught through the medium of Welsh.

St. David himself spoke an old form of Welsh fourteen centuries ago, and the Saint has become synonymous with keeping the language alive, and all that is good in the Welsh way of life. Welsh is one of the oldest living European languages, and although it has been oppressed for centuries, it has refused to die and is alive and growing today. The Welsh medium schools, which have largely been set up during the past four decades, have played an important part in making the language an everyday language as opposed to just an academic one.

St. David's Day at the primary school began with a religious service in one of the chapels or churches in Carmarthen. We went to school dressed in our Welsh costumes. The girls looked charming in a pais a betgwn - a petticoat and overcoat, made of Welsh flannel, and a tall beaver hat, worn over a frilled white bonnet. The boys wore a white shirt with a jabbot and wrist frills, a Welsh flannel waistcoat, black breeches, long woollen socks and black shoes. To complete the outfit we wore a flat beaver hat. I wore my national costume with pride until I was seven years old, and after that I had to be bribed to do so... I later wore a Welsh flannel waistcoat in honour of the great day.

The pupils marched through the town, led by the Mayor and town dignitaries. People gathered to see us marching past, and to wave us on. Little did they realise that we, the sons and daughters of Welsh Wales, almost froze to death on these mornings. After all, a white shirt was little protection against the cold winds of a March morning, despite having a woollen jumper underneath. If it rained we were doubly miserable. To add to our discomfort the churches and chapels were colder and the services long. Dewi was a strict disciplinarian: he would have been proud of us.

But we went back to school for a bowl of cawl - or leek broth: the traditional St. David's Day meal. After lunch we danced Welsh dances, sang Welsh folk songs and recited Welsh poems. The highlight of the day was the judging of the longest leek competition, but I never envied the winner because he was cheered on to 'eat some of your leek'. Again, Dewi would have approved, because as you probably remember, he was also a vegetarian.

At my secondary school, which was also a Welsh medium school, it was no longer compulsory to wear the Welsh costume on St. David's Day. But we still celebrated: we held an Eisteddfod - a competitive singing, dancing and reciting festival. This lasted all day and ended with an inter-house choir competition. And needless to say, all competitions were in the Welsh language.
Well, I hope that you now have some idea of who St. David was, and why he is so important to the Welsh. Dewi's words still ring down through the ages. So perhaps, as we go about our lives, we would be wise to remember his very last words, and to do the little things.

Kritik an Becks Vergleich vom "kastrierten Kater"

Summary in English: Bishop Walter Mixa of Augsburg criticised the German government's plan to create 700,00 extra creche places for young children. He suggested that this provision would encourage women to abandon their young children and go out to work, thus degrading the women to "birth machines". This term led to angry protests, even among Catholic Christians, and members of the hierarchy distanced themselves from Bishop Mixa, who later claimed he had been quoted out of context.
