Benedict's Pastoral Crosses

Another interesting change in papal fashion is the variety of different pastoral crosses already used by Pope Benedict XVI.

He began his pontificate using the staff which became famous under Pope John Paul II but was actually made for and used by Pope Paul VI.

But Benedict has a very different personal style than Paul VI. He prefers a more traditional, more substantial golden staff, and so opted for the hefty "ferula" used by Pope Pius IX in the 19th Century,

but finding this in general too cumbersome he he has had his own lightweight pastoral cross designed and began to use this in 2009:

An anderer Stelle in diesem Blog (Post vom 11.01.2010) habe ich geschrieben, dass zu dem Zeitpunkt 4 Regionalbischöfe für das Bistum Münster fehlten .

Am 31.05.2010 meldete das Bistum:

Das Warten hat ein Ende: Die Domkapitulare Dieter Geerlings (62) und Christoph Hegge (47) sowie der Borkener Propst und Kreisdechant Wilfried Theising (47) sind von Papst Benedikt XVI. zu Weihbischöfen für das Bistum Münster ernannt worden. Die Entscheidung wurde am Montag (31.05.2010) um 12 Uhr in Rom durch die Kurie und im St.-Paulus-Dom in Münster durch Bischof Felix Genn bekannt gegeben.

Die gemeinsame Bischofsweihe wird am Sonntag, den 29. August, im St.-Paulus-Dom stattfinden.

Der ernannte Weihbischof Geerlings wird als Regionalbischof in der Region Coesfeld-Recklinghausen tätig sein. Die Region Borken-Steinfurt übernimmt der ernannte Weihbischof Hegge als Regionalbischof. Den Niederrhein betreut der ernannte Weihbischof Theising.

Die Bekanntgabe im Dom erfolgt in einer gottesdienstlichen Form durch Bischof Felix Genn. Die Ernennung von gleich drei Weihbischöfen gab es in Münster zuletzt 1973, als Reinhard Lettmann, Max Georg Freiherr von Twickel und Ludwig Averkamp Weihbischöfe wurden.

Die Vita der neuen Weihbischöfe:
Dieter Geerlings wurde am 15. Juli 1947 in Emmerich geboren und empfing die Priesterweihe am 20. Mai 1973. Nach Kaplansjahren in Bocholt St. Georg und ab 1977 in Kleve-Kellen St. Willibrord wurde er 1979 Geistlicher Leiter und Diözesanpräses der Katholischen Jungen Gemeinde (KJG) im Bistum Münster sowie Subsidiar in Münster St. Konrad. 1980 ging er als Vikar nach Herten-Westerholt St. Martinus. 1984 wurde er Regionalvikar für die Region Niederrhein und Rektor der Kapelle des St.-Norbert-Hauses in Xanten.

Seit 1988 ist Geerlings Vorsitzender des Caritasverbandes für die Diözese Münster, im selben Jahr wurde er auch Domvikar am St.-Paulus-Dom in Münster und Geistlicher Rat. Außerdem ist er seither Seelsorger des Malteser-Hilfsdienstes und Geistlicher Berater für den Sozialdienst Katholischer Männer und Frauen. Seit 1989 ist er zudem Geistlicher Beirat im Diözesanverband der Caritaskonferenz und im Diözesanverband der Vinzenzkonferenzen. 1995 ernannte ihn der Bischof zum residierenden Domkapitular am Paulusdom.

Christoph Hegge wurde am 15. August 1962 in Rheine geboren. Die Priesterweihe empfing er in Rom am 10. Oktober 1988. Danach setzte er zunächst seine Studien fort. 1989 ging er als Kaplan nach Alpen St. Ulrich, bevor er 1991 erneut für weitere Studien freigestellt wurde; Hegge ist promovierter Kirchenrechtler. 1996 holte ihn Bischof Reinhard Lettmann zurück nach Münster und machte den Geistlichen zu seinem Kaplan und Privatsekretär; außerdem wurde er Domvikar am Paulusdom in Münster. 1997 übernahm er zudem die Aufgabe als "Promotor iustitiae" am Bischöflichen Offizialat (Diözesangericht) in Münster.

Seit 1999 trägt Hegge Verantwortung für den Bereich Orden, Säkularinstitute und Geistliche Gemeinschaften im Bischöflichen Generalvikariat in Münster, ist seither stellvertretender Generalvikar sowie Geistlicher Rat. 2002 übernahm er zusätzlich die Aufgabe des Rundfunkbeauftragen des Bistums Münster für den öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunk. Seit 2004 ist der Geistliche residierender Domkapitular an der Hohen Domkirche in Münster.

Wilfried Theising wurde am 20. September 1962 in Wettringen geboren. Zum Priester geweiht wurde er am 14. Mai 1989. Danach ging er zunächst als Kaplan nach Beckum St. Stephanus. 1993 war er Kaplan zur Aushilfe in Ennigerloh-Westkirchen St. Laurentius bevor er 1994 als Kaplan nach Münster St. Elisabeth und Herz Jesu ging. 1997 ernannte ihn der Bischof zum Pfarrer in Metelen St. Cornelius und Cyprianus.

Seit 2003 ist Theising Pfarrdechant und Propst in St. Remigius, Pfarrer in Christus König und Vicarius Cooperator in St. Michael in der Seelsorgeeinheit Borken, Borken-Gemen und Borken- Marbeck. Außerdem ist er seit 2003 Kreisdechant im Kreisdekanat Borken.

Vier Regionen warten auf Weihbischöfe
Mehrere Regionen des Bistums Münster warten seit vielen Jahren auf einen neuen Weihbischof:

Mit rund 527.000 Katholiken (Stand 01.01.2008) ist die Region Borken-Steinfurt die größte der fünf Regionen im Bistum Münster; sie umfasst das westliche und nördliche Münsterland. Seit Januar 2008 haben die Kreisdekanate Borken und Steinfurt keinen "eigenen" Weihbischof mehr; damals wurde der bisherige Weihbischof Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst Bischof von Limburg. Nun folgt ihm Domkapitular Christoph Hegge in die Region.

Im Herzen des Münsterlands und am Rande des Ruhrgebietes liegt die drittgrößte Region des Bistums: Coesfeld-Recklinghausen. In ihr leben 430.000 Katholiken. Bis zu seinem Tod am 16. Dezember 2009 war dort Weihbischof Josef Voß tätig. Bald übernimmt Domkapitular Dieter Geerlings diese Region.

Die Kreisdekanate Kleve und Wesel werden von Weihbischof Heinrich Janssen, der seinen Sitz in Xanten hat, seelsorglich begleitet. Trotz Erreichens der Altersgrenze hatte der Papst ihn 2007 gebeten, seine Tätigkeit weiter auszuüben. In der Region Niederrhein leben 437.000 Katholiken. Heinrich Janssen wird künftig von Wilfried Theising abgelöst.

Überdies ist die Region Münster-Warendorf "vakant": Ende 2009 wurde Weihbischof Franz-Josef Overbeck Bischof von Essen. Im Kreisdekanat Warendorf und im Stadtdekanat Münster leben 362.900 Katholiken. Noch hat der Papst über die Vorschläge von Bischof Genn nicht entschieden.

Übrigens: Mein Wohnort, Neuenkirchen, liegt genau zwischen den Geburtsorten von den neuen Bischöfen Hegge und Theising. Von Rheine geht's direkt nach Westen nach Neuenkirchen (7 km) und von Neuenkirchen geradeaus weiter nach Wettringen (6 km) !!!

After the dust had settled down a little following the devastating child abuse scandal in the United States, revelations began to emerge in Europe and to develop into a major crisis, especially in Ireland, but also in Germany, Italy, Belgium, .....

Cormac appointed Apostolic Visitator of the Archdiocese of Armagh

The following press release was published from the Vatican on 31.05.2010:

Following the Holy Father’s Letter to the Catholics of Ireland, the Apostolic Visitation of certain Irish dioceses, seminaries and religious congregations will begin in autumn of this year.

Through this Visitation, the Holy See intends to offer assistance to the Bishops, clergy, religious and lay faithful as they seek to respond adequately to the situation caused by the tragic cases of abuse perpetrated by priests and religious upon minors. It is also intended to contribute to the desired spiritual and moral renewal that is already being vigorously pursued by the Church in Ireland.

The Apostolic Visitors will set out to explore more deeply questions concerning the handling of cases of abuse and the assistance owed to the victims; they will monitor the effectiveness of and seek possible improvements to the current procedures for preventing abuse, taking as their points of reference the Pontifical Motu Proprio "Sacramentorum Sanctitatis Tutela" and the norms contained in Safeguarding Children: Standards and Guidance Document for the Catholic Church in Ireland, commissioned and produced by the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church.

The Visitation will begin in the four Metropolitan Archdioceses of Ireland (Armagh, Dublin, Cashel and Emly, and Tuam) and will then be extended to some other dioceses.

The Visitors named by the Holy Father for the dioceses are:

His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor, Emeritus Archbishop of Westminster, for the Archdiocese of Armagh;

His Eminence Cardinal Sean Patrick O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, for the Archdiocese of Dublin;

the Most Reverend Thomas Christopher Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, for the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly;

the Most Reverend Terrence Thomas Prendergast, Archbishop of Ottawa, for the Archdiocese of Tuam.

In its desire to accompany the process of renewal of houses of formation for the future priests of the Church in Ireland, the Congregation for Catholic Education will coordinate the visitation of the Irish seminaries, including the Pontifical Irish College in Rome. While special attention will be given to the matters that occasioned the Apostolic Visitation, in the case of the seminaries it will cover all aspects of priestly formation. The Most Reverend Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York, has been named Apostolic Visitor.

For its part, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life will organize the visitation of religious houses in two phases. Firstly it will conduct an enquiry by means of a questionnaire to be sent to all the Superiors of religious institutes present in Ireland, with a view to providing an accurate picture of the current situation and formulating plans for the observance and improvement of the norms contained in the "guidelines". In the second phase, the Apostolic Visitors will be: the Reverend Joseph Tobin, CSsR and the Reverend Gero McLaughlin SJ for institutes of men; Sister Sharon Holland IHM and Sister Mairin McDonagh RJM for institutes of women. They will carry out a careful study, evaluating the results obtained from the questionnaire and the possible steps to be taken in the future in order to usher in a season of spiritual rebirth for religious life on the Island.

His Holiness invites all the members of the Irish Catholic community to support this fraternal initiative with their prayers. He invokes God’s blessings upon the Visitors, and upon all the Bishops, clergy, religious and lay faithful of Ireland, that the Visitation may be for them an occasion of renewed fervour in the Christian life, and that it may deepen their faith and strengthen their hope in Christ our Saviour.

Multiple Pallia

Each Metropolitan Archbishop receives his pallium, the white woollen band with black crosses worn around the neck over the chasuble as a sign of his authority, from the hands of the Pope at the next solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul after his installation.

As Archbishop Vincent Nichols reminded us in a recent interview he now has the privilege of having two (one received from John Paul II on 29.06.2001 as Archbishop of Birmingham and one from Benedict XVI on 29.06.2009 as Archbishop of Westminster).

And he then proceeded to tell us what will finally happen to his pallia. After his death the current pallium will be placed on his shoulders and the other one folded under his head and both will be buried with him.

In 2008 the mosaic of Benedict XVI in San Paolo fuori le Mura, planned for posterity, was actually altered to reflect the change in papal fashion !

Similar Shunting in Westminster and Birmingham

After presenting his mandatory resignation as Archbishop of Westminster shortly before his 75th birthday and being asked by Pope Benedict to stay in place for the time being, my "favourite" Cardinal, Cormac MURPHY O'Connor, was finally granted his well-earned retirement in 2009, to be replaced by native Liverpudlian Vincent Nichols, until then Archbishop of Birmingham and himself a former auxiliary in Westminster. In fact it was he who celebrated the requiem mass for the late Cardinal Basil Hume in 1999 and served as Apostolic Administrator of the archdiocese (which cutely prefers to call itself a "diocese") during the ensuing interregnum until Cormac's arrival.

It will be interesting to await Archbishop Nichols' theo-political development at Westminster, since he has been observed to have become decidedly more conservative during his stay in Birmingham.

In October came the return half of the swap, as Westminster's Auxiliary Bishop Bernard Longley was appointed Archbishop of Birmingham. The following "family" photo, taken at Archbishop Longley's installation in December 2009,

Some Selected Episcopal Appointments

Since I have been away for quite a while, there have been a lot of new bishops appointed in the meantime and it would perhaps not make sense to introduce them all here. So I've decided to pick out a few bishops of particular interest to me.

Zuerst mein Ortsbischof.





Im April 2008 trat unser langjähriger Bischof von Münster, Dr. Reinhard Lettmann, in den wohlverdienten Ruhestand.

Während einer Sedisvakanz von fast neun Monaten übernahm Weihbischof Dr. Franz-Josef Overbeck die Leitung des Bistums als Apostolischer Administrator. Die meisten Beobachter rechneten damit, dass Bischof Overbeck den Zuschlag bekommen würde, und daher waren wir nicht wenig überrascht, als es kurz vor Weihnachten hieß, der bisherige Bischof von Essen, Dr. Felix Genn, sei zum neuen Nachfolger des Hl. Liudger und Bischof von Münster ernannt worden.

Bischof Overbeck musste aber nicht lange warten, bis er selber im Oktober 2009 zum Nachfolger von Bischof Genn als Bischof von Essen (im Volksmund "Ruhrbischof" genannt) berufen wurde. Am 20. Dezember 2009 wurde er in dieses Amt eingeführt, kurz bevor Essen und die Ruhr zur Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2010 wurde. Overbeck ist mit 45 Jahren der jüngste Bischof Deutschlands.

Mit der Beförderung Bischof Overbecks und dem Tod eines weiteren Münsteraner Weihbischofs, Dr. Josef Voß, kurz vor Weihnachten 2009, waren insgesamt vier Weihbischofsstellen im Bistum Münster frei - Rom hat nun alle Hände voll zu tun, um diese Ernennungen bald vorzunehmen.
